Welcome To Urbana
Urbana, Maryland, home of the Villages and the
Highlands, Frederick's newest planned
communities offering over 3000 homes along with community parks, tot-lots and tennis
courts, clubhouse with Olympic size pools. Parks, jogging and biking trails outline this fabulous community just a
few miles north of the Frederick/Montgomery County line. There's a commercial center offering residents
grocery, retail, restaurants and there are lots of activities for children, seasonal yard
sales and activities such as the Spring Fling and Fall Festival that keep the
community alive.
The Villages of Urbana is situated right in the
middle of forest conservation and outlined by the Monocacy river, which were once the grounds of that famous battle known as "The War That Saved Washington." The Monocacy River's most important role in history came during the Civil War. The Battle of the Monocacy, a small but crucial day-long conflict, took place on the blisteringly hot day of July 9, 1864. It is one of the Civil
War's most significant yet little-known battles. What played out that day in
the corn and wheat fields four miles south of Frederick, Maryland (known today
as Urbana) was a full-field engagement between some 12,000 battle-hardened
Confederate troops led by the controversial Jubal Anderson Early, and some
5,800 Union troops, many of them untested in battle, under the mercurial Lew
Wallace, the future author of Ben-Hur.
When the fighting ended, some 1,300 Union troops were dead, wounded, missing
or had been taken prisoner, and Early---who suffered some 800 casualties---had
routed Wallace in the northernmost Confederate victory of the war.
Today's Urbana is prized by parents for its award-winning schools, seasonal activities and local sports leagues. Also, 3 championship golf courses are within
a short distance from the villages and the Highlands. All surrounded by scenic countryside on the
edge of the "once" rural town of Urbana and within sight of Sugarloaf
Mountain.
